The Client
Radisson Blu is a trusted international brand with hotels in cities across the globe. The 207-bedroom Radisson Blu Durham is a popular facility for business and leisure travellers in the historic city, which boasts several UNESCO World Heritage sites.
The Brief
The hotel group has worked with SaveMoneyCutCarbon over many years on carbon-reduction and energy-saving projects. Radisson Blu Durham required a solution in response to increasing demand from guests for electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities.
The UK has seen a surge in demand for EVs, with nearly half a million models on the roads as of June 2022 and the government has scheduled an end to the sale of new diesel and petrol cars and vans by 2030 as part of its Net Zero strategy.
Over half of younger UK drivers are likely to switch to EV models while company car and fleet drivers across the UK & Europe are moving to EVs, benefiting from massive fuel and maintenance savings.
Radisson Blu Durham engaged SaveMoneyCutCarbon to provide an EV charging solution to cover current demand and lay the groundwork for expected future expansion.
The Solution
SaveMoneyCutCarbon offers a full, end-to-end solution for commercial EV charging stations which are all approved by the Office of Zero Emissions Vehicles (OZEV) and are suitable for high usage environments.
The SaveMoneyCutCarbon EV team worked with hotel management and technical staff to design and specify the most effective destination charging solution, from preliminary high-level design and feasibility study to site survey and audit.
The team installed 2 x 22kW Alfen Double Chargepoint, with associated groundworks and bay marking, along with support for back office, after care and maintenance.
Destination charging enables SaveMoneyCutCarbon customers in both private and public sectors to offer EV charging as a service to the growing number of EV drivers. Destination chargers are chargers that are open to the general public, allow business owners to offer charging as a low-touch revenue generating service.
EV charging-as-a-service opens up a valuable revenue stream, taking advantage of the exciting new era of low carbon transport. The destination charging service can attract new customers, build brand loyalty and drive brand awareness, as well as strengthening Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) policy
Results
The destination charging solution had its first customer only a day after going live and has since completed 189 sessions, delivering a total of 5,901.96 kWh of energy to vehicles.
The EV charger has generated significant revenues since launch and the hotel has commissioned SaveMoneyCutCarbon to plan for additional chargers and future-proofing solutions that minimise cost of installing additional chargers.
