The Client

The Radisson Blu Hotel at London Stansted Airport is one of the sought-after properties for travellers and for business meetings. With 500 rooms and suites, the hotel is in prime position, only three minutes from the airport central terminal.

The Brief

Radisson Blu is part of the Carlson Rezidor group, which is focusing on environmental aspects through its Think Planet initiative, aiming to reduce the group’s energy consumption by 20% by the end of 2016.

The hotel wanted to cut its energy use and improve lighting quality with the deployment of LED lighting in the corridors across all four floors as well as upgrading the emergency exit blade lights with an LED retrofit.

At the same time, it was keen to see a solid business case that would raise profitability and cut carbon footprint, provided by SaveMoneyCutCarbon.

Over the past two years, the SaveMoneyCutCarbon Field Services team has partnered with Carlson Rezidor hotels to deliver many energy and water-saving projects in the past two years, completing detailed surveys, investment ready proposals, specification, product supply from major manufacturers, UK wide project management and installations.

In 2014, SaveMoneyCutCarbon completed a wide range of Think Planet energy and water-saving projects for Carlson Rezidor on time and on budget, cutting costs by more than £470,000.

The Solution

An exhaustive lighting survey of the hotel corridors was completed by the Field Services team to identify the types of luminaires, number of lamps and render as well as existing wattages, on/burn times, and lighting thermodynamics.

Working to minimise any disruption to normal hotel operations, the team retrofitted 955 GU10s and emergency lights on schedule and within budget over a 10-day period.

The team communicated in detail with the General Manager and Chief Engineer to ensure that a solution was provided that met with their requirements and expectations.

Close communications also greatly helped to minimise delays and late changes.

Annual savings of £12,500 with LED lighting
Reduction of 48% in CO2 emissions per year

Challenges

The originally chosen downlighters for the corridors were changed after a sample installation, with GU10 luminaires preferred as these has a narrow beam that is more suited to the environment.

The team also discovered an issue with some fittings running on a time clock that was not functioning and, although not part of the scope of works, worked to find a solution to resolve the problem.

"We worked closely with the hotel management to ensure that the LED retrofit went according to plan without affecting the guests. As with any big project, there were challenges but our experience in this area ensured that problems were resolved and the work was completed on time to the highest standards."
