Why choose Pura baby products?

Being a parent can be hard enough without trying to navigate eco-friendly products too. We’re all striving to make the world a better place for all of the children that come after us and starting from home can be the most effective way to do this. Choosing eco-friendly products teaches children from birth to respect and protect the environment and it opens up those conversations early.

Nappies and baby wipes are two of the most important products in your arsenal. You’ll go through thousands of them in a lifetime so choosing eco-friendly alternatives like Pura will massively relieve your carbon footprint as parents.

Pura is on a mission to change the world and make it easier for parents to create a world that their children would be proud of.

What is Pura?

Pura all began from a single home in Cheshire. Guy and Abi started to create affordable, eco-friendly baby products that would take care of the planet and leave a legacy for their baby and children all around the world. We champion small businesses that want to make the world a better place, which is one of the reasons we love Pura.

Pura’s 100% plastic-free biodegradable baby wipes are bottom-friendly and plastic friendly! Made with 99% water, the rest contains organic aloe vera – no perfume, alcohol, chlorine or plastic. They are 100% biodegradable and compostable, meaning they can be disposed of and leave nothing behind.

Similarly, the plastic-free biodegradable flushable toilet wipes are made with 99% water and enriched with organic aloe vera. They’re compostable and biodegradable, so just like toilet paper, they will break down when it is flushed.

Lastly, Pura Eco Nappies are high-performance sustainable nappies. Forget disposable nappies, these bring you the same convenience while minimising your impact on the planet. Enhanced with soft organic cotton and containing 0% chlorine, perfumes or allergens, they’re gentle on baby’s skin – a fact confirmed by dermatologists.

What makes Pura sustainable?

When Pura asked parents how much plastic baby wipes contained, they were stunned to hear that 90% of wipes contain plastic in the UK. To combat this, Pura baby wipes are 100% plastic-free and eco-friendly! Once used, you can simply pop it in the bin and the plant-based fibres will biodegrade into nothing.

Swapping to Pura products isn’t just good for the planet, it’s great for your skin too. Made with aloe vera, it’s a natural plant product which is brilliant for hydration. It has been used for years to heal and soften skin. As it contains no nasty ingredients, they have been dermatologically approved and celebrated for its use on sensitive skin and eczema-prone skin. Plus, it has been approved by the British Skin Foundation and Allergy UK and it’s not been tested on animals.

The flushable toilet wipes are planet-friendly and can be flushed down the loo without clogging up your pipes. Most flushable wipes may claim to be biodegradable but they can actually take 100 years to biodegrade fully, causing fatbergs in sewer systems and leaving behind microplastic in the water. This will eventually leak into lakes and rivers, causing harm to the local wildlife that relies on that water to survive.

In 2019, The Guardian reported a ‘microplastic pollution’ crisis as research revealed that more than 1,000 small pieces of plastic per litre were found in the River Tame in Manchester. Even in more remote areas such as Loch Lomond in Scotland found two or three pieces of microplastic per litre. Studies like this show how important it is to choose plastic-free products such as Pura, especially for wet wipes as the UK consumes 11 billion per year!

Pura Eco Nappies are environmentally friendly that doesn’t compromise on performance. That’s why they’ve been awarded the EU Ecolabel because they meet the highest environmental standards. Although they are super thin, they’re super absorbent due to the organic cotton and patented leak-free technology.

Better yet, the plant fibre inner core is FSC-certified, produced with 100% renewable energy and guaranteed no production waste. All nappies are manufactured in the carbon neutral plant where Pura has calculated how much carbon is created during the manufacturing process and where possible, reduced it or offset it. Plus, the packaging is fully recyclable!

All of these wonderful elements ensure the nappies are sustainable from the beginning of the process to disposal. They are also dermatologically approved and Allergy UK approved so even babies with sensitive skin can enjoy these products.

Why choose Pura over non-sustainable options?

Our global waste problem is renowned. In the UK alone, millions of tonnes of waste is disposed of in landfill every year, and that’s not including the waste that ends up in the ocean! An estimated three billion nappies are thrown away every year in the UK, accounting for 2-3% of household waste.

Most traditional nappies contain plastic which ends up polluting the space it ends up – landfill or water systems. Switching to biodegradable Pura nappies is an easy and effective way to make a positive difference. Made with eco-friendly organic cotton and using 100% green electricity while keeping the convenience of traditional nappies, it’s a recipe for greatness.

Pura nappies are available in a range of sizes, packs and bundles. The 29 or 33-pack is ideal for travelling or if you want to try a new brand before committing to bulk buying. Alternatively, the 5×29 pack means you’ll never have to worry about running out of nappies again. Using our Regular Reliable Deliveries, you can choose how often you want them delivered straight to your front door!

Going green doesn’t have to be more expensive either. A 29 pack of size 4 Pura nappies costs £7 and a 30 pack of size 4 Pampers Active Fit from Tesco costs £8. The Pura 5×29 pack contains 145 eco disposable nappies for £33.35, meaning each nappy costs 23p. In comparison, a Jumbo pack of Pampers only contains 74 nappies for £11, meaning each nappy costs 15p. This isn’t a huge price difference considering how much you are saving the planet by choosing eco-friendly nappies.

Think wet wipes are harmless? Think again. Like so many items we use and flush away every day, they contain plastic. Not only do they cause blockages in water systems, but they also pollute oceans, causing long-term problems for marine life. Most toilet wipes, even if they’re labelled as flushable, do not dissolve when flushed. Instead, they clog and create giant mountains of mush. That’s where Pura 100% plastic-free biodegradable flushable wipes come in!

They break down just like toilet roll when flushed down the toilet – accredited by Water UK as Fine to Flush. Being 100% compostable and biodegradable, their matter simply returns to the earth. Also, they contain zero plastic so you don’t have to feel guilty for shedding microplastic into the ocean.

The 14×40 pack contains 560 wipes for £20.30 which is 0.03p per wipe. In comparison, a 4×36 pack of Andrex Ultra Care Flushable Wipes contains 144 wipes for £6 which is 0.04p per wipe. There may not be a huge price difference for your wallet, but there is for the planet.

Similarly, the average amount of baby wipes parents get through in the first year is 8,280, just think how much landfill this equates to over one lifetime. The Pura 100% plastic-free biodegradable baby wipes could be the bottom-friendly and planet-friendly answer you’ve been searching for.

Approved by midwives, paediatricians and Mumsnet-rated, you know they’re the real deal. Just like the flushable wet wipes, they’re biodegradable, compostable and plastic-free so when you dispose of them, you know they’re really going to disappear. Made with 99% water and organic aloe vera, they contain no nasty ingredients that will harm your baby’s skin like some traditional brands do.

The Pura 10×70 pack contains 700 wipes for £22.80, which is 0.03p per wipe. In comparison, the Pampers Sensitive 0% Plastic Baby Wipes 4×52 pack contains 208 wipes for £3.75 which is 0.01p per wipe. Although the Pampers pack is slightly cheaper, the pack does not say it is biodegradable or compostable so they are not as kind to the environment as Pura baby wipes.

Why choose Pura over other sustainable options?

Yes, many huge businesses such as Pampers, Huggies, Simple and supermarket own brands are starting to offer more sustainable options. But what we love most about Pura is their ethos. Born from a family in the UK, Pura is on a mission to create eco-friendly products accessible to everyone.

They are the only nappy brand to partner with NappiCycle – working together to keep nappies out of landfill and turn them into other things such as housing materials. Additionally, they have partnered with the Woodland Trust to plant, protect and restore trees across the UK. And the list goes on!

Pura is a pending Certified B Corporation. What does this mean? That they have been officially recognised for putting people and the planet before profit. As a start-up company, they must spend 12 months pending before they are officially certified but watch this space! However, right now they are working hard gifting plastic-free wipes to the NSPCC to help vulnerable families across the UK.

These are just a handful of reasons as to why we choose Pura baby products – showing they go above and beyond! But we honestly just think they’re the best on the market. Using their patented leak-free technology, Pura nappies have up to 12 hours of protection. It draws moisture away from your baby’s skin, allowing air to circulate for maximum dryness, breathability and comfort.

Some ‘eco’ brands practice greenwashing by using synthetic materials that make it harder for nappies to biodegrade and when they do, release harmful chemicals. However, Dr Charlotte Lloyd, a Royal Society research fellow at the University of Bristol told Which that “nappies containing natural fibres that are sustainably grown and harvested are going to be more environmentally friendly than something synthetic”.
