Stasher Bags: Your FAQs Answered

Stasher believes that one small change can make a big impact, which is why they create endlessly reusable, non-toxic, self-sealing silicone storage bags to prevent billions of plastic polluting the ocean and adding to landfill.

Stasher bags replace the need for plastic storage bags and so far, they’ve saved one billion single-use plastic bags from entering our oceans and landfills. But this is just the beginning, their community is ever-growing. To show you why we’re so passionate about Stasher bags as a sustainable alternative, we’ve answered some FAQs.

What is silicone?

Silicone is made from two natural resources: sand (silica) and carbon, that ensure Stasher bags have the purity of glass and functionality of plastic. But there’s more – Stasher bags are made from 100% pure platinum grade silicone which has many benefits:

  • Highly resistant – it can withstand extreme temperatures without damaging or degrading
  • Durable – it doesn’t crack, dry out, crumble or rot overtime
  • Lightweight – easy for on-the-go and limited space
  • Made from natural resources
  • It’s non-toxic – it contains no BPA, latex, lead or phthalates
  • Non-hazardous waste – it can be 100% recycled at selected locations

This safe and durable material means you can bake, microwave, sous vide, boil and freeze your Stasher bags.

What makes silicone better than plastic?

In comparison to silicone, plastic is made from harsh chemicals that contaminate our planet and can lead to human health issues. The natural material of silicone ensures that Stasher bags are safe to store food without worrying about chemical fillers or by-products found in plastic bags.

Additionally, Stasher bags can be 100% recycled by sending them back to Stasher for free, to recycle and repurpose so you don’t have to worry about them ending up in landfill or inside poor marine life.

Are Stasher bags created in sustainable and ethical conditions?

Stasher are a certified B Corp which means that Stasher, their factory, and their suppliers must maintain good and responsible practices. They also visit their factory every year to make sure they maintain their high standards.

How many times can Stasher bags be reused?

There is no limit! Stasher bags are endlessly reusable so you’re preventing tons of plastic waste every time you use it, and it’ll save you a small fortune.

Can you cook with Stasher bags?

Absolutely! With the pure platinum food-grade silicone material, it’s safe to use in your kitchen from the microwave to boiling water up to 400F (200 Celsius).

How to use:

  • To microwave, leave the bag open to vent
  • To sous vide, place your food and seasoning inside the bag but don’t seal it. Slowly lower your bag into hot water, allowing all of the air to escape and a vacuum to form around your food. Then, carefully seal the bag and cook
  • To bake, leave the seal open and place it on a baking sheet or ovenproof dish directly in the oven
  • To store, place your prepped food or leftovers inside the bag and stash it in your fridge / freezer

What’s the best way to clean the bags?

To clean your bag, you can use soap and warm water or place in the dishwasher (but don’t turn the bag inside out as this can compromise the edges). If you’re having trouble reaching those awkward corners of the bag, Stasher suggest filling the bag a quarter of the way with warm water and soap and giving it a nice shake. A little brush helps too!

What’s the best way to dry my Stasher bag?

Sometimes Stasher bags need a little more drying time once they are washed by hand or in the dishwasher. Stasher recommend using any non-sharp kitchen items to stand your bags on, including other bottles, cups, or paper towel holders.

Some of our team have used those handy pot lid organiser, which is a great Stasher tip! Just make sure not to turn your bag inside out when drying.

Do Stasher bags stain, or absorb smells?

Because Stasher doesn’t use any toxin sealants for their bags, the silicone can sometimes stain with certain foods. The best way to avoid this is to choose a bag colour that corresponds with your food, e.g. a citrus Stasher for red spaghetti sauce. You can also reduce staining by immediately cleaning after use.

But if the bag does happen to stain, we’ve found a safe way to remove it without using harsh chemicals:

  1. Make a baking soda paste with vinegar to water
  2. Apply to discoloured container
  3. Let sit for at least 20-30 minutes
  4. Rinse and wash the bag like normal
  5. Or toss your Stasher in the sun for a natural stain remover. Those powerful sun rays will zap any stain!

What about the smell?

Stasher silicone is nonporous, inhibiting bacterial growth and odours. Certain smelly foods may leave a slight odour in the bag, but that can be easily remedied with a thorough washing or baking soda soaking. Or try leaving a fresh slice of lemon in the bag overnight.

Are Stasher Bags dishwasher and freezer safe?

They’re completely dishwasher safe but as we’ve covered, don’t flip the bag inside out as it can compromise the bag’s sealed edges. Stasher Bags are also freezer safe, however use caution when carrying and storing liquids. When filling the bag with liquid, place it upright in the freezer and it should be okay.

How much volume will each size hold?

There are several different size Stasher bags:

The Sandwich Bag holds 445ml which is just less than one pint of milk and perfectly fits a sandwich, half a grapefruit or two small chicken breasts.

The Snack Bag holds 290ml and fits half an avocado inside.

The Pocket Bag holds 45ml and is perfect for snacks on the go like trail mix, nuts, seeds, and even treats for little ones (furry or not!).

The Half-Gallon Bag holds 1.9 litres and two strip steaks or a bundle of asparagus.

The Stand-Up Bag holds 1.6 litres and is great for storing soups, sauces and dry store goods.
